The title of this article comes from an article I recently red in’s magazine. Basically what the article was talking about were the different areas that you need to look at if you want to increase your income for the coming year.

In particular, what I liked most about the article was what it had to say about social media.

What’s the deal with social media anyway?

For the past couple of years I’ve been screaming to anyone who would listen that facebook had other devious ideas about your data that you were handing over for free in the form of updates. There is no way that they could stay in business and grow if they don’t in some way try to monetize all of that information that they have compiled on you.

Some of you who keep up with facebook might already know that they have reached over a billion users. That’s quite an accomplishment.

However, their accomplishment can become your gain, if you know how to leverage it to your advantage.

See, with reaching that one billion member mark, they have opened up new potential markets that bode well for you. Their sheer size combined with the awakening of consumers to the fact that their data and privacy actually matter. This awakening will lead to more and more people starting to use smaller companies that put more emphasis on privacy concerns as a way to offset their use of twitter and facebook.

What this means for you?

This means that for you to benefit from this new customer awakening, you can create little networks that are more tightly connected, and allow you and the members to have more control. These little communities that you create can be the a great place to build your tribes. To sum things up here.

Social media will still be here for you to use. However, there is change upon the horizon. Having smaller networks that emphasize more control and privacy will become legitimate alternatives to monster sized companies like facebook and twitter. You can leverage this movement by setting up your own more well connected and smaller leveraged networks.
